There are two different sphinx traditions. The Grecian sphinx has the head of a woman and can be quite malicious, devouring those who answer her riddle incorrectly. Oedipus is the only person to have answered correctly. The Egyptian sphinx, on the other hand, has the head of a man and is known to be kind and benevolent.
