Interesting fact:

In France, the Christmas festivities already begin on the 6th of December with the festival of St Nicholas. Children start to get gifts such sweets and chocolate. On Christmas Eve however, they put their shoes out their front door, all polished and shiny so that Father Christmas can fill them with more sweets!
