Eight of Santa’s nine reindeer were created by Clement Moore in the memorable Christmas poem The Night Before Christmas which he had anonymously written in 1823. Two of the reindeer originally had Dutch translations, Duner and Blixem, and were later translated Donner and Blitzen, (which is the German translation for lightning).
