Valentina Tereshkova was a textile factory worker and amateur skydiver for several years before she was selected from over 400 candidates to join the Vostok 6 crew to launch into space in 1963. By doing so, Tereshkova became the first woman in space. Afterwards, she worked as a cosmonaut instructor.
