There aren’t many cemeteries in San Francisco. In 1937, a law was passed, stating that cemeteries could no longer be built within city limits because the land was considered to be too valuable. There are only three cemeteries within the city limits. Many of the early cemeteries were dug up and relocated, unclaimed headstones used to build seawalls, landfills, and park gutters.
