Did you know that spelling bee judges can disqualify contestants who make unintelligible or nonsense sounds while trying to spell a word? Along with unintelligible noises and nonsense sounds, spellers can also be disqualified from spelling bees for giggling. The judges of the Scripps National Spelling Bee call this ‘the giggle factor’ and try to weed out any giggle-inducing words before the final event.
