Interesting fact:

The croissant was probably invented in Vienna in 1683. The city was under siege by the Turks, and when they tried to gain access through a tunnel, they were discovered by Viennese confectioners. In celebration of this, they created pastry that was crescent-shaped, buttery - and not French at all.
