The winter solstice marks the time each calendar year when the day is at its shortest interval of the year and when the Earth reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happens twice a year, once in December in the northern hemisphere and once in June in the southern hemisphere. In western Christianity in the northern hemisphere, this day is called Blue Christmas.
