Roman numerals are used to mark the Super Bowls due to the football season falling in two calendar years. Although roman numerals have marked every Super Bowl game since the first in 1967, the NFL opted to ditch it for the 50th game in 2016. The reason being that the league reportedly ran through 73 different versions of a Super bowl logo with the roman numeral “L” and fell short.
