This pattern of overlapping circles is also known as the “Flower of Life”. The flower of life is created by an overlapping circle grid. These kind of ornaments have a long history. Some circle patterns appear on historical artefacts from the 8th century BC. Roman mosaics quite often are showing this pattern, but it can also be found in the Osiris in Ancient Egypt. Geometrical patterns like this had a resurgence in Islamic art.
