So a hockey, water polo, handball or soccer player scores three times in a row and you call it a hat trick. How come? This term dates back to an old accomplishment. Back in 1858 a player by the name of HH Stephenson managed to bank three points in his sport. As the legend goes, the fans were impressed so much, that they held a collection for Stephenson to present him with a new hat for each of his three consecutive successes.
