Made-up languages can be found quite frequently in fictional worlds, from Lapine as spoken by the hares in “Watership Down” to the linguists’ favourite Klingon from the Star Trek universe. But would you have thought that JRR Tolkien basically created Middle-earth just to give a fictional background to the Elvish languages he had created?
