One of the earliest examples of a fictional universe is Sir Thomas More’s 16th century book “Utopia”. It describes an island inhabited by a progressive, egalitarian society – but it’s never really clear whether More idealises his model community or rather satirises it. The original edition came with a map of Utopia, complete with the Utopian alphabet!
